Gasoline Prices Rise as Crude Oil Markets Tighten

Gas pump handle

During the Spring Break season, the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline climbed sharply as crude oil continued an upward trajectory.

Recent data from AAA showed the US national average reaching $3.59 per gallon last week, when fuel prices were tracking closely with levels seen in spring 2024. Seasonal demand is beginning to rise as warmer weather brings more drivers onto the roads. Crude oil remains a key driver of pump prices, and recent trading activity has pushed crude above the $100‑per‑barrel mark several times in recent days.

In a significant move to boost supply and ease price pressures, the US announced it will release 172 million barrels of oil from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve, as part of a coordinated effort by the International Energy Agency and its member countries to release a total of 400 million barrels – the largest emergency oil release in history (Reuters.com).
